Let me preface this by setting the record straight: I love Costco.

As a petite frugalista with grandparents who lived through war and poverty and parents who rewash Ziploc bags, Costco was my foray into American consumerism and budget shopping. Much of my childhood was spent meandering through the welcoming aisles of the warehouse, generously helping myself to delectable food samples and expanding my nerdy book collection in the Costco book section. Where else can you purchase a ginormous box of Playtex tampons, a party platter of California rolls, Rolex watches and coffins all in one place? (Yes, I’ve purchased all of the aforementioned…well, minus the Rolex and the coffin.)

Sure, numerous folks rely on Costco for super-sized peanut butter jugs and cleaning supplies, but I’ve looked to Costco for clothes, jewelry and other fashion items that one may not necessarily turn to Costco for. So, while I had heard rumors that Costco sold wedding dresses, I was amazed to see a wedding dress on display at my local Costco.

Don’t get me wrong. There wasn’t anything wrong with the dress. In fact, it was quite pretty. Yet, there’s something about seeing a pretty wedding dress against a tawdry red curtain next to people returning toilet cleaning supplies that made me go, “No freaking way.”

I get clothes all the time at Costco, thrift stores, no-name stores, etc. and in general, I’m indifferent to labels and designers as long as I like what I see. Yet, there’s something about getting my wedding dress at Costco that turns me off, and I can’t quite put my finger on it. I mean, much like designer capsule collections that are oh-so-vogue these days, Costco’s bridal line is “designer,” and it’s not as if the dresses have a scarlet “C” written across the bodice.

Would you purchase your wedding dress at Costco?
