TOTE-ally thinking ahead

TOTE-ally thinking ahead

The fashion industry is something that you can only really understand if you educate yourself about it. I can’t count the number of times I’ve gone shopping with a pal and they’ve said “there is no way that’s actually a $100 t-shirt.” but they only say that because they just don’t understand it. They don’t understand that that t-shirt has a double stitched hem so that it will never curl up at the bottom. They don’t see that it’s been cut exactly on grain insuring that it won’t twist when you wash it. They don’t read the label to find that the fabric is finished so that it will never pill. They just see a plain t-shirt they could find “anywhere” and they see the price tag.

I’ve come to the conclusion that if you never learned the reasoning behind a price tag, you certainly wouldn’t understand it. but this applies to anything.
Especially handbags.

Brynn is thrilled to get started on some new designs and she has us interns to help her. We are planning to create a functional but budget-friendly tote bag. This bag should have the same quality and sturdiness of the rest of her bags but we want it to hit a price range that doesn’t scare away those who just don’t understand.

The first step to creating a bag is to do research. taking a look at the different tote bags that are available out there, make it simpler to come up with ideas to lower our price range as well as see what our target market might be interested in. I started off by making a collage of bags I found on Pinterest that appealed to me, then took away those different elements from the bags that drew my attention and put them all into a few sketches to organize my ideas.

With handbags, one of the most expensive elements is the hardware. We know we want a front zip pocket on our bag as well as a compartment to hold a laptop. This is where the bag will be functional. We also know we want to make it in leather, obviously. This is where the bag will be durable.

The next step is to narrow it all down. I started off by drawing one idea, the next idea, and then we continue that process until one of the ideas clicks! That is where we are now in this process. Something you should remember in the design industry is that it takes about a year for a design to go from an idea to a product so we have to keep in mind that trends change and this bag is going to need to be classic, affordable, and many essential it should have that resilient quality our customers are looking for!
